In 2016, A ten year old boy was able to participate in Track & Field through a local recreational sports association. A Teams For Kids Foundation grant was used to cover the required registration fees, association fees, and uniform costs for this child. He began practicing in the late spring, participating in various events including middle and long distance running, long jump, and shot put, among others. By May, he was invited to compete in the regional championships in Connecticut and by June, he found himself traveling to Nationals in Virginia.
For this particular child, these experiences were unexpected. The only child of a single working mother, who has always worked very hard but earns a very low wage, this child was used to the word “no.” While there were many things he dreamed of doing and places he dreamed of going, most were out of reach because of his family’s financial situation. When the family found themselves homeless, the sacrifices only grew. This child entered Homeless Solutions as a shy, sometimes even cowering young boy, who missed his friends from the place where he used to live and worried if he’d ever make new ones.
Being able to not only practice, but excel, in Track & Field gave this young boy confidence that he had lost. He felt strong, he was proud of himself, and after each track practice would return to the shelter and tell the staff of all the new things he learned. He met new friends who had similar interests as him, and suddenly found that his dreams were within reach.
